Moran Outdoor School has a number of employment opportunities for those interested in outdoor environmental education. Positions usually open include internships, naturalists, camp cooks, and E.L.C. park hosts. Click here for details on applying. Every season Moran Outdoor School hires two to four interns. The program's directors have worked to create a supportive, in depth, program for those who want a way to get in to the OEE field. Interns need no prior experience; in exchange for a small stipend, a place to stay, food while school is in session, and extensive training and support, the interns assist with program needs and, by mid-season, teach classes. Some interns arrange for college credit for the work they do, while others are college graduates who need hands on experience in the field before becoming naturalists. Click here for a full job description. Moran Outdoor School's Naturalists are rare in the OEE field in being contracted at eight to ten dollars per hour. Hours are less than most programs (as the Naturalists are brought in only for classes, overnights, and evening activities) but at two thirds time, they are still earning a good deal more than they would elsewhere with the added benefit of actual free time. Many Naturalists work part time at other island jobs as well, and have little trouble finding work. On-site housing can usually be arranged. Good working conditions and a great program mean low turn over, which unfortunately means few Naturalist positions are available, but one or two are commonly hired each season; if you are interested (and have previous experience in the field), call and see if openings are available (360-376-6173). Click here for a full job description Moran Outdoor School usually has a need for one or more assistant and head cooks. If your interests lie more in culinary pursuits than educational ones, you're looking for some seasonal work in a fantastic island setting, and you don't mind lots of kids around, than apply today. On-site housing is a possibility. As a part of Washington State Parks, Camp Moran (and the outdoor school), has a host position available. Couples are more than welcome. A full trailer hook-up is provided in exchange for a number of volunteer hours each week. Volunteer hours include some kitchen and program support, with additional hours adapted to the skills that hosts bring with them.
